Tuesday, Dec 15, was really the big day for Russell Ferguson. He was crowned So You Think You Can Dance’s sixth-season champion during Tuesday night’s live finale broadcast of the Fox reality competition series.

Those were tense two hours, as the 20-year-old Ferguson injured his leg following a high-impact hip-hop routine at the start of the show. He had to be helped out onto the stage to hear the results–the culmination of 24 episodes and 85 different routines.

Ferguson emerged as America’s favorite dancer On Tuesday night’s finale, six finalists were eliminated one by one until it came down to Ferguson, who along with his partner Ellenore Scott performed a winning paso doble.

Ferguson, with little formal training and no experience in many of the dance forms, won the title after beating out more technically gifted dancers like Jakob Karr of Orlando, Fla., and Kathryn McCormick of Burbank, Ca., the first and second runners-up, respectively.

After winning the competition, Ferguson claimed the $250,000 grand prize and became the first Krumper to win the title.

Despite the injury, Ferguson emerged as America’s favorite dancer after viewers voted him the best dancer over other contemporary dancers.
